About Barb, the Artist.

Barb Walker is senior Wiradjuri woman from Wagga Wagga NSW, now living in Pittsworth Qld on Giabal Country. She is a retired midwife, having worked in most states and territories in Australia. Barb has completed Certificate 1, 2 and 3 in Wiradjuri Language.
"For all of my life I have been a ‘crafting’ woman. I have always loved working with fibre, from knitting, crochet, cross stitch, embroidery, scrapbooking, card making and weaving. Whether it was the daisies in the front lawn, the long stringy bark off the trees or the long grasses around the home dam, I have always weaved. I began to concentrate on my weaving about 15 years ago, whilst on a visit to Wagga Wagga and meeting with Aunties at the local 'Hands On Weavers' group. Simply sitting, weaving, and yarning with other crafters gives so much balance back into the day. It is such a pleasurable craft to do and when using natural fibres that I have gathered myself, it makes it even more special. When I am unable to gather natural fibre, I use a mixture of man-made fibres that are available."
Barb dyes her own raffia using available fruits, vegetables, spices and plants from her garden, or food colouring from the supermarket. She loves to teach her Wiradjuri ‘Wadya Waybarra’ (coiling weaving) to all who wish to learn. Barb teaches weaving one day a week, for one semester a year, at her grandchildren’s school. She conducts workshops for children and adults at many locations in Toowoomba, Tara, Stanthorpe and Allora, and gets great enjoyment when participants share what they have achieved at home.
